Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association welcomes all its affiliates and players to the 2023-2024 Season.

We play the season as 2 separate competitions, Pre Xmas, and Post Xmas, thus allowing complete changes to be made to teams Post Xmas and having a new draw for the Post Xmas games.

The Super Sixes competition has been merged with the Blaster competition and is played on Friday nights by U8 & U9 players and all clubs can participate, it is not limited to just the host clubs.

We have a female competition organised and it will play in the Met South West Competition U13 & U15 age groups. Games are all one-day games, and some games are based at our Kalinga Park grounds.

I encourage all our Affiliates to ensure that their Delegates attend the monthly Delegates Meetings which are held at the South Pine Sports complex, Brendale at 7.00 pm on the last Monday of every month (see Item 3).

Any changes to the Draw or wet weather cancellations are advised on Facebook so if you want timely notifications, it is essential for you to Like & follow BNJCA on Facebook. To all our participants please remember the codes of behaviour and particularly our Spirit of Cricket.

Thank you to all Club volunteers for their hard work during sign-on and setting up of their teams for the coming season. In closing we hope that all players and officials enjoy their 2023-2024 season.

BNJCA Delegates

The BNJCA Delegates are nominated members of affiliate clubs within the BNJCA Zone.  Clubs can nominate a maximum of 2 members.

The Delegates meet monthly, at AFL building, South Pine Sport complex, Brendale at 7.00pm on the last Monday of each month during the Cricket season, to discuss operations and communications within the Zone relative to Junior Cricket.  Generally, there are no meetings in April, May, June and December. The Annual General Meeting is held 7.00pm Monday, 31 August 2020.

BNJCA Executive

The BNJCA Executive is the elected committee responsible for the operations of Junior Cricket, Representative Cricket and manages the financial administration of the BNJCA Zone.  The Executive meet monthly, at AFL building, South Pine Sport complex, Brendale at 7.00pm on the second last Monday of each month, during the Cricket season to discuss operations and communications within the Zone relative to Junior Cricket.  Generally, there are no meetings in June and December.

Trophies will be awarded for both Pre and Post Xmas competitions to winners of age groups U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and Open and girls U13 and U15 at the Annual Presentation.

1. a) WEB SITE

BNJCA has a Web Site: http://bnjca.qld.cricket.com.au/ which you can visit to find information such as Rules, Draw, Constitution and Calendar of Events. Please visit it regularly and go to “Latest News” page to see any updates.

1. b) THE DRAW

The draw is available for downloading from the web site as well as being sent to each club.  Club executive committees are responsible for ensuring that their team officials can download the draw and print copies for all team members.  There may be updates to the Draw caused through school asbestos removal programmes, vandalised pitches, fetes or other activities. Check the website and Facebook regularly.

1. c) PLAYING TIMES

For U10s, play will commence at 9.45am and U11s at 7.15am. Girls games are at various locations so check the draw to confirm times. For Girls U11 play will commence at 7.15am and 9.30am. The U13 girls commence at 9.45am and U16 girls at 8.00am.

Generally, for all other ages (except U14 see below) each day’s play shall commence at 8:15am and the scheduled finish time is 11:45am. If play commences later than 8:15am the scheduled finish time shall be that time which is 3½ hours after the commencement time subject to the proviso that irrespective of how late a match starts, play must conclude no later than 12.00 noon on the same day. We ask that if you are playing on turf wickets, to please start at 8.00am and ensure that you finish by 11.30am so that the groundsmen are able to prepare the pitches for the Grade games later that day.

U14 games will be scheduled to be played Saturday afternoon from 1:15 to 4:45pm. For these games, if play commences later than 1:15pm the scheduled finish time shall be that time which is 3½ hours after the commencement time subject to the proviso that irrespective of how late a match starts, play must conclude no later than 5:00pm on the same day.

Blasters play Friday evenings from 5.30 pm (these starting times may vary at different locations, please check with the host clubs).

1. d) WET WEATHER INFORMATION

The Management Committee is loath to make a general cancellation. Coaches are requested to communicate with opposition coaches using the phone numbers on club pages on the website. Grounds should be inspected using the Fitness of the Ground rule as a guide and a decision made whether or not to play. Coaches and Managers are asked to communicate with parents as soon as possible if there is a cancellation.

If a General cancellation decision is made on Friday evening, it will be posted on the website http://bnjca.qld.cricket.com.au/ and on Facebook & Twitter by 7:00pm.  If the General cancellation decision is not made until Saturday morning it will be posted on the http://bnjca.qld.cricket.com.au/ website and on Facebook & Twitter by 7:00am.

Procedure for the following week

If games are cancelled one week and no play has occurred and the second week can be played, then games revert to ONE DAY games and follow ONE DAY rules.

1. e) STORM PROCEDURE

F) PUBLICATION OF SCORES IN THE SUNDAY MAIL

Please ring your results in to the Sunday Mail as per the following instructions below.  The Rules require team officials to phone scores to the Sunday Mail Phone 3666 7766 after 12 Noon and before 3.00p.m. on Saturdays.   Ringing after this time, it will not be published!

Details to be supplied:

1. Zone (Brisbane North),
2. Age Group, (Open or Under 12 etc.)
3. Team runs scored,
4. Best 2 individual batting scores for BOTH TEAMS and
5. Best 2 bowling performances for BOTH TEAMS.

Please do not use ‘defeated’ for age groups Blaster to U12 as these are non-competitive games. You should use ‘versus’. Responsibility for advising Sunday Mail is the team batting first.  If you are involved in the Blaster competitions, please ensure that you communicate that information – Junior Blaster or Blaster to the Sunday Mail.

1. G) MATCH RESULTS/ELECTRONIC SCORING

Match Results for U12(Pathway) to Open Div and U13 & U15 girls are to be input to Play HQ. They must be entered within five (5) days of completion of a match and player awards are made based on these entries.  For U10 & U11 it is optional whether you enter the stats/result or not.

Match results and player stats for U-12 to Open Div and U13 & U15 girls must be entered within five (5) days of completion of a match or teams will get NO competition points.

Where scoring is done by electronic means, the result details must be entered and signed by both team officials, using the form included in the Rule book or downloaded from the website. If this is not done, then no dispute will be allowed to proceed.

If a game result or player stats, once entered in Play HQ, has an error and is “locked”, then send an email to mycricket@bnjca.org.au and explain the error and request that the game be “unlocked”.  You will be advised when this has happened, and you can then go in and correct the mistake.

1. h) DISPUTES and/or DISCIPLINE PROCEDURE

Should an incident arise, that cannot be resolved by rational discussion between officials, the team protesting is required to advise in writing within seven days of the incident to the President of the offending club advising details of the grievance.

A copy of this letter is to be despatched to the zone secretary to be tabled at a Management Committee meeting & the Presidents of the clubs concerned are requested to communicate to discuss, and hopefully resolve the matter.

If the protesting Club President is not satisfied with the outcome, then the matter will be referred to the zone secretary who will convene a Disciplinary Committee hearing. If the dispute is about the result and there was electronic scoring involved, see f) above.

1. I) RULES

If any problems arise about the Rules of Play, or if clarification or interpretation of a particular rule is required, please refer the matter to the Secretary, Phone 0417637934.  

1. j) KEYS TO TOILETS

BNJCA does not have toilet keys!

Toilet keys may be available to a number of school toilets. The Clubs have the keys if they are available for a school. Please check the grounds’ location sheet on the website to find the applicable club who has responsibility for the school you are playing at and ring the club to determine if keys are available. The phone numbers of the Club Executive are available on their relevant Club page of the eAllrounder on the website.

1. K) ACCIDENT REPORTS/INSURANCE CLAIMS

Insurance Claim Forms can be downloaded from the BNJCA web site. It is important that parents follow the correct procedure to ensure a successful claim. Forms must be lodged with the insurer, NOT Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association. For any queries or claims, please contact your club Executives.

1. l) HEALTH

Parents are asked to ensure that players have (and use!) adequate sunscreen 15+.  Players should also be instructed to reapply sunscreen at drink breaks on very hot days.  Players should be sent to games with adequate drinking water.

1. m) FACEBOOK & TWITTER

Please register on the BNJCA Facebook page via the http://bnjca.qld.cricket.com.au/  website so that you will get advices about any cancelled games or new draw information. You can search for our page by typing – bnjca.

1. n) CANTEENS

Some clubs have canteens open on Saturday mornings. The following clubs have them open at their home grounds:

Burpengary Cricket Club: Findlay Street Burpengary.

Redcliffe City – Filmer Park: Hornibrook Esplanade Woody Point.

Ferny DCC: Tramway St Ferny Grove.

Sandgate Redcliffe:  Racecourse Rd Deagon.

Seventh Brigade: (Warehouse) Marchant Park.

Valleys DCC: Yoku Rd Ashgrove.

THE PREAMBLE – THE SPIRIT OF CRICKET

Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself.  The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the captains.

1. There are two Laws which place the responsibility for the team’s conduct firmly on the captain.

Responsibility of captains

The captains are always responsible for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws.

Player’s conduct

In the event of a player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire or criticising by word or action the decisions of an umpire, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into disrepute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and to the player’s captain and instruct the latter to take action.

2. Fair and unfair play

According to the Laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play.  The umpires may intervene at any time, and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required.

3. The umpires are authorised to intervene in cases of:

• Time wasting
• Damaging the pitch
• Dangerous or unfair bowling
• Tampering with the ball
• Any other action that they consider to be unfair.

4. The Spirit of the Game involves RESPECT for:

• Your opponents
• Your own captain and team
• The role of the umpires
• The game’s traditional values

5. It is against the Spirit of the Game:

• To dispute an umpire’s decision by word, action or gesture
• To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire
• To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice, for instance:

1. to appeal knowing that the batsman is not out
2. to advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing
3. to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one’s own side.
4. Violence

There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play.

7. Players

Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match.  Every player is expected to make an important contribution to this.

Nomination for the Spirit of Cricket Award

The BNJCA supports the Spirit of Cricket, as embodied in the preamble to the Laws of Cricket, in a tangible way each year with a Spirit of Cricket Award.  The Association accepts nominations from clubs for a player displaying the true spirit, traditions, and values of cricket.  The player must be playing in a BNJCA competition. This award does not apply to adults.

In order for a club to nominate a player, the action must be at the player’s instigation, not a result of an adult’s intervention.  The nomination can come from anyone involved in the game; other players, umpire, coach or spectators, but must be made through the affiliated club of the nominating person.

The club should assemble all the relevant details of the player’s action and forward it to the BNJCA Secretary via email secretary@bnjca.org.au , within 14 days of the incident.

9. a) Coaches Code of Behaviour

• Remember that young people participate for pleasure and winning is only part of the fun.
• Never ridicule or yell at a young player for making a mistake or not coming first.
• Be reasonable in your demands on players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.
• Operate within the rules and spirit of your sport and teach your players to do the same.
• Ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive experience. All young people are deserving of equal attention and opportunities.
• Avoid overplaying the talented players; the just average need and deserve equal time.
• Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of all players.
• Display control, respect and professionalism to all involved with the sport. This includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. Encourage your players to do the same.
• Show concern and caution toward sick and injured players. Follow the advice of a physician when determining whether an injured player is ready to recommence training or competition.
• Obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest coaching practices and the principles of growth and development of young people.
• Any physical contact with a young person should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player’s skill development.
• Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

1. b) Players Code of Behaviour

• Play by the rules.
• Never argue with an official. If you disagree, have your captain, coach or manager approach the official during a break or after the competition.
• Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials and sledging other players, deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent are not acceptable or permitted behaviours in any sport.
• Work equally hard for yourself and/or your team. Your team’s performance will benefit, so will you.
• Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays whether they are made by your team or the opposition.
• Treat all participants in your sport as you like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor.
• Cooperate with your coach, teammates and opponents. Without them there would be no competition.
• Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please parents and coaches.
• Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

1. c) Parents Code of Behaviour

• Remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.
• Encourage children to participate, do not force them.
• Focus on the child’s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing.
• Encourage children always to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence.
• Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
• Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good performances and skilful plays by all participants.
• Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.
• Respect officials’ decisions and teach children to do likewise.
• Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials, and administrators. Without them, your child could not participate.
• Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
